HOW TO CONVERT
RECTANGULAR TO POLAR AND POLAR TO RECTANGULAR
USING CALCULATOR
Dear friends electrical
engineers generally face problems when the electrical parameters are in complex
forms. A complex number contains a real and an imaginary part as follows.
i)5+3i
ii) 0.5+j8
In the above eqn (i) “5”
is the real part and “3i” is the imaginary part.
Similarly in eqn (ii)
“0.5” is the real and “j8” is the imaginary part.
Points
to remember:
Ø Addition of complex
number:
Suppose two number
given
Z1=0.5+j3, Z2=0.6+j10
Z1+Z2=1.1+13j
|
Now
Real part added with
real and imaginary part added with imaginary part.
Ø Multiplication of
complex no with natural no
Suppose Z1=100 (natural no)
Z2=10+j0.9 (complex no)
Z1*Z2=100(10+j0.9)=1000+j90
|
That means real and imaginary part both
multiplied with 100.
Ø How to differentiate
between rectangular and polar form?
Rectangular form is same as complex no
Suppose
Z=1.1+j13
|
The above
equation is in rectangular form.
The
polar form of the above eqn will be
Z=13.05<85.2°
|
Ø What is the necessity
of converting rectangular to polar form?
We can add two numbers in rectangular form but we can’t
multiply two numbers in rectangular form or divide. First
we have to convert rectangular to polar.
HOW TO
CONVERT RECTANGULAR TO POLAR AND POLAR TO RECTANGULAR USING CALCULATOR
Rectangular to polar
Step 1:
First change the mode to “comp” for normal
calculation. Don’t confuse it with complex nos for “COMPLX”
Step 2:
Suppose a number given that Z=1.1+j13.It’s in rectangular form.
We have to convert it to polar
So click the “ Pol ( “ key just below mod key.It’s also the third
key of the second row.
In the bracket write 1.1
give a comma by clicking comma “,” key (fifth key of the fifth row as
in casio calculator )
Now write
the imaginary part 13.Click the end bracket key “)”.
The display should be as in the table below
Pol(1.1,13)
|
Step 3:
Now just click equal key “=”.You
will get the first part as 13.046…
For the second part click “Rcl” key(first key of fifth row) and
then “tan” key simultaneously. You will get result as 85.163.
So the polar conversion of rectangular form
Z=1.1+j13 is Z=13.046<85.163°
Polar to Rectangular
Step 1:
Suppose a number given z=13.05<85.163° in
polar form.We have to convert it to rectangular.
Step 2:
Click “shift”
key, then “Pol(“ key
simultaneously.In the screen the display should appear as follows
Rec(
|
Step 3:
In the bracket write 13.05,then click comma “,” key.After that click end bracket key
“)”.
Then click equal. You will get 1.1
Step 4:
Click “Rcl”
then “tan” key for the second part. You’ll get 13.45.
So required no is Z=1.1+j13.45.
